We will be concerned primarilywith flutes, grooves, ripple cross-lamination.įield work: A Brunton compass is required to measure the orientationof any current structure. In orderto measure paleocurrent indicators, unidirectional and bidirectional sedimentarystructures must first be identified. Procedure: Describe bed thickness, sedimentary structures, sandstoneto shale ratios, and bed coarsening and thickening trends.

The goal of this labproject is to understand the nature of the basin and basin infilling andsource regions during the upper Middle Ordovician and relate this to tectonicevents during this time. 2) to identify andmeasure paleocurrent indicators in turbidites and 3) to plot and presentthese data in a accurate and coherent manner. Objectives: The objectives of this report are: 1) interpretthe depositional environments of the Schenectady Fm. One thing that you do not know, however, it the relative age of the units studied - they were not all depositedat exactly the same time, and we are not sure how they fit together intime. Most of the formation (and the Utica Shale) is restrictedto the Nowadagan stage but the lower beds belong to the Canajoharian stage(i.e. Using data collected from the PlotterkillPreserve, Visher Ferry, and data from several other sites in the MohawkValley (see additional data from Mohawk Valley) you will be able to partlyreconstruct the paleoflow directions within the basin during deposition.Īge: The Schenectady Formation is Mohawkian in age (upper MiddleOrdovician). Many geologists accept the idea that the clastic material in these turbiditeshad a source to the east, the paleocurrent data from this unit does notclearly support this contention. These rocks belong to the Middle Ordovician Schenectady Formation(=Austin Glen Formation or Normanskill Fm.) and they are some of the westernmostfolded and thrusted rocks in the area: deformation increases in intensityto the east towards Logan's Line. The Visher Ferry Power plant is located on the Mohawk River at Lock7. Unlike rocksat the Plotterkill Preserve, we will need to be concerned with the geometryof the folds and how we will restore the rocks (and their paleocurrents)back to horizontal. In this field exercise we will examine and characterize the paleocurrentdirections in rocks that have been folded and faulted.
